Being interested in technology means I like to try to keep up on new developments, experiment and make prototypes with them. And being a Hamradio operator MeshCore does trigger my interests.

I will be adding a few pages to this website about various experiments regarding MeshCore.

Note : When you want to build a solar powered repeater, please take a look at this page on this website. I have measured 2 solar panels during different weather conditions. And the conclusion may supprice you.

What is MeshCore?

MeshCore is a lightweight, decentralized communication system for sending secure text-based messages using LoRa (Long Range) radio hardware. It is designed to work entirely without the internet or cellular networks, making it ideal for off-grid communication, disaster recovery, and tactical security.

 Key Features

  • Decentralized Networking: Operates independently of any central server or public infrastructure.
  • Encrypted Messaging: Supports end-to-end encryption for secure private communication.
  • Efficient Routing: Unlike "flooding" networks where every node rebroadcasts everything, MeshCore uses more efficient multi-hop routing that can extend range through up to 64 "hops" via repeaters.
  • Room Servers: Features a unique "store and forward" capability where a dedicated node (Room Server) can store messages for recipients who are temporarily offline.
  • Role-Based Hardware: Devices are flashed with specific roles:
    • Companion: Your personal radio that connects to a smartphone or computer.
    • Repeater: A fixed station (often solar-powered) that relays messages for others but doesn't send its own.
